Each brand has their own unique differences and qualities that set themselves apart from each other. But before we get to each brand, we need to dive in to the different sizes of catcher’s mitts. Because when it comes to catcher’s mitts, size does matter!
Catcher’s mitts will range from 31-35”. Your youth catcher’s mitts will be anywhere from a 31-32”, and adult mitts being 32-35”. The main difference between the youth and adult catcher’s mitts will be the hand size and fit of the finger stalls. For the adult catcher’s mitts, each size will have certain attributes. A 32- 32.5” catcher’s mitt will be for catchers who want a more nimble glove. This size will help catchers get the ball out of their glove quicker on transfers. In turn, this will help cut down on their pop time to second base. A 34” catcher’s mitt will be more for the catcher who is super concerned with framing and receiving. The 34” mitt will have a bigger surface area for the ball to be gobbled up. This will in turn help a catcher’s framing and receiving abilities. If you’re a catcher who catches a lot of pitchers who throw a lot of off-speed with good movement, you might want to consider a 34” catcher’s glove. But, because the glove and pocket are much bigger, the ball has a tendency to be deeper into the glove which can prolong the transfer. As catchers, we know that even a split second can be the difference between a base runner being safe and out. So, it’s definitely a lot of give and take between a 32.5” mitt and a 34” mitt. But, you can get a glove that is right in between with a 33” catcher’s mitt. A 33” mitt seems to be one of the more popular sizes. And lastly, we carry a 35” catcher’s mitt that is specifically made for catching knuckleball or off-speed dominant pitchers. This 35” mitt will give you the ability get a glove on pitches that have insane movement. A lot of professional catchers have a 35” mitt in their bag for those certain type of pitchers.
